I like American high school movies, but I usually watch them for the hot lead actor, the adorable lead actress or just for the lulz. Most of them usually satisfy one, two or all the factors, but about a year ago, there were two high school flicks that scored a place in my list of favorite movies. One will remain a mystery until the 29th of May, and the other is Easy A.
Most high school movies have a female lead who usually lurks in the shadows, unseen and unheard, until she gets a makeover, and gets noticed by the cute football captain who asks her out. Easy A is about unnoticed high school student Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) who becomes popular all right, but for all the wrong, and false, reasons. After lying to her best friend Rhiannon (Aly Michalka) about being on a date with a college guy, and being overheard by a religious classmate Marianne (Amanda Bynes), Olive is branded as the latest tramp of the school. Instead of trying to quash these rumors, Olive decides to dress provocatively with a red 'A' on her clothes (hence the title), becoming very infamous and losing all her friends. The movie is narrated in flashbacks from Olive's point of view, with the help of her friend Todd (Penn Badgley), and a podcast, in which she admits that everything said about her was false.
I like movies that try to abandon and mock cliches, because let's face it, how many high school movies can you bear with popular and girly cheerleaders, overly manly jocks and parties with kegs of beer and a trashed house? This movie has all these things, but with a sarcastic undertone, and shows us how pointless and shallow they usually are. I especially loved Emma Stone's character in the movie, because her sarcastic and intellectual personality really connects with someone like me. This one is a must-watch, especially if you're in the mood for something lighthearted.
